CLASSES - The Academic Program

  • Capitalizes on readiness giving worthwhile experience and materials that let him do what he is ready to do now, while preparing him for the next step which is an ever present opportunity, opening up tomorrow without spoiling today.
  • Geared to the times the children live in today.
  • Caters to the individual needs of every child no matter his age or "I.Q.".
  • All the full day children have, besides the academic subjects and specialized Montessori materials, many extra-curricular learning activities.

 LANGUAGE

Speech:   Beginning with an emphasis on expression, speech and clear diction, the children gain in self-confidence and soon become interested in various forms of expression, interpretation and dramatics.

Writing:   Again the emphasis is on self-expression.  Often a Montessori child writes before he reads as writing involves the single task of self-expression, whereas reading involves the interpretation of another's ideas.

Reading:   The program is individualized and no single method of teaching reading is used, but various combinations according to the interests and abilities of each child.

Phonics:   With a strong emplasis on phonics and meaning from the very beginning, the children learn to spell accurately and read meaningfully.

Grammar:   Young children are deeply interested in words, and the function of words, hence we give them an early experience in grammar and syntax.

MATHEMATICS

To calculate is a natural tendency of man.  Our children have no predjudice against numbers for they experience numbers and their intricate relationships through their senses first in a concrete form, not by mere memorization.

FRENCH / SPANISH

Even the three year olds enjoy French / Spanish conversation.  No one who has seen how a three year old immigrant  learns English and absorbs the local intonation pattern long before the mother, will doubt the validity of starting a foreign language so early in a child's school career.

 MUSIC

To respond to music is a natural and basic tendency.  Our children have ample opportunity to explore music whether by creating new tunes on the bells or by interpreting it with modern dance under the guidance of specially trained music and modern dance teachers concerned with the appreciation and enjoyment of music.

Each child has two opportunities to perform before a large parent audience.

SCIENCES

Even the younger child experiments with air, water, electricity, etc.  and reasons out the cause of each reaction himself thereby developing his intellect.  Our purpose is to give the young child a clear impression of the physical environment, not to give him a lot of scientific information.  A child goes home with his brains stirred -- his reasoning powers and his memory sharpened.

ART

Each child is encouraged to use his creative imagination through trial and error.  From the beginning his work with the Montessori Sensorial materials helps refine his sense of colour and other forms of discrimination, preparing him to see harmony in his surroundings, and using this in expressong himself artistically -- he goes home with his feelings stirred too.

SOCIAL STUDIES

An experience in group dynamics providing for each child sufficient contacts with society and the environment so that he can form himself in relation to it.  It is the whole world and all humanity that he has contact with, not just a small part.

FREE PLAY

There is ample opportunity for both indoor and outdoor games in small or large groups, either in our recreation room or our spacious, well equipped yard, or in the playground or meodow nearby.

Both within the classroom, and  without, the children develop standards of conduct and courtesy, cooperation, self-control and a real respect for the rights and opinions of others -- while developing their own individual talents, interests and abilities, to the fullest

 MONTESSORI SUMMER DAY CAMP

The Montessori School of New York is pleased to announce its EXCELLENT SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAM offering a unique combination of both indoor Montessori activities and outdoor camp activities in it's own yards and in the neighboring and spacious Prospect Park, Flushing Meodows and Central Park.  This choice of outdoor space lends itself to free play and organized games as well as Educational Field Trips.  Besides the zoos, the playgrounds, and the meodows of the various parks, the children will enjoy visits to the nearby Botanic Gardens and Children's Museums as well as the local libraries and museums.

Indoors the stress will be on Montessori Educational Exercises for Early Learners with special preparation for reading and number work.  The older group will enjoy relating reading and number work with their field trips and their experiments in Science and Biology.  Those having problems with Math and Reading can benefit a great deal from this program.

The All Day Children will have the opportunities to widen their experience even further by means of trips to the United Nations, The Natural History Museum, the Planetarium, the Aquarium, various zoos and museums of art to mention only a few of the exciting trips planned.

Our rainy day activities will include cooking, basic gymnastics (floor exercises) and elocution.

All will enjoy beginning swimming in one of our own yards and water play for the younger children on hot days.

Weekly trips for pony riding or pony cart riding and horses for the older children can be arranged for a special fee.

So that the children may have a well rounded experience we have planned excellent programs in Music and Movement, Arts and Crafts and Language, culminating in an End-of-Camp Talent Show.

Children enrolled in the Summer Program will be given preference for September Admission.  Children usually find the Summer Program an exciting experience and an easy transition between home and school.

The Summer will also give those unable to attend the Fall Session an opportunity to experience at least a short Montessori term.  For young children who need to be phased in, summer is an excellent time to do so - Reserve the full time but attend short periods of time as per the need of each child - with agreement of the director.

Does your Elementary or Junior High aged child need special help in Math, Reading or other subjects?  We may have just the special program you're looking for!

Please note that we have an excellent specialized High School Entrance Examination preparation course.  Get an early start in preparing for  TACHs, the Specialized Science High Schools Exams, or ERB'S.
